How Commercial Printing Can Support Your Business Goals

Commercial printing can be an effective tool for businesses, serving as a part of your marketing and branding team. Here’s how such a partnership can benefit your organization:

  • Providing high quality signage and branding materials – Commercial printers have access to the highest quality printing equipment, paper and inks. They know what types of finishing techniques to use with a particular print run and therefore can guarantee the best looking, most vibrant print materials possible.
Your company’s first impression is often made through its print materials. A commercial printer can provide professional-level signage, banners, decals, posters, letterhead, brochures, booklets and other print materials to support your organization or initiative.
  • Supporting a variety of branding or outreach campaigns – Whether your team is growing a business or running a political campaign, expert commercial printers can support your efforts as they develop.
It’s common to make necessary changes to a print marketing or political campaign once it’s underway. For example, research may show that customers respond to a certain type of messaging, typography or color scheme better than other options. A commercial printer can make those adjustments as needed, ensuring your audience’s feedback is immediately incorporated into your print materials.
  • Producing large-scale print volumes – Businesses operate at scale and therefore must have print operations that can scale along with them. A single marketing or rebranding initiative may require thousands of posters, signs or decals. A new worksite may need hundreds of metal safety signs or vinyl decals to remain compliant. A political campaign will need a variety of print materials, such as yard signs, vinyl banners, push cards and mailers. Sourcing this volume can be a challenge, unless you’re partnered with a reputable commercial printer.
  • Providing necessary design expertise – If your company doesn’t have a high quality logo, if your political campaign doesn’t have branding materials in place, if your community initiative is trying to get the word out, and so on, you’ll need effective graphics to generate the interest you’re hoping for.
If your business or organization doesn’t have people in-house it can turn to for branding design, a commercial printer can develop these branding materials for you. Logos, graphics colors, fonts – commercial printers have expert designers on staff who can identify the best combination to use with your brand.
  • Branding a variety of materials and promotional items – Experienced commercial printers have advanced print technologies that they can leverage to print on paper, vinyl, cotton, metal, wood and more. These expanded print capabilities mean commercial printers can brand anything with your logo or other brand marks.
The most obvious example of this is apparel. Shirts, jackets, hats and outerwear can all be turned into high-visibility real estate for your brand, spreading awareness wherever they are worn. Drinkware such as coffee mugs and water bottles can carry your brand into the office or gym. Small promotional items like pens, USB drives, phone chargers and tote bags are proven brand boosters at industry events and brand conferences.
Print collateral and promotional items can be developed for any professional event or setting. You just need an expert commercial printer who has the versatility to match.

What Can Commercial Printers Develop for Their Clients?

  • Promotional apparel – T-shirts, jackets, hoodies, hats and more

If you manage an active worksite, a commercial printer can develop:

If you’re running a political or issue-focused campaign, a commercial printing company can supply the following:

  • Campaign posters, flyers and banners
  • Yard signs
  • Car decals and stickers
  • Political mailers
  • Political apparel
  • Push cards

In short, if your organization has a need that print can solve, a commercial printer will offer the best solutions.

Commercial Printing in Houston Since 1921

Carroll Printing & Promotions has run a commercial print shop in Houston since 1921, and today the shop at 2907 Canal St. is the Gulf Coast’s oldest Union printing company. Our team brings over 65 years of combined experience to every job, from a box of business cards to a full brochure, poster and signage program for a product launch.

Most of our commercial printing service comes from Houston and Gulf Coast businesses, plus labor organizations, campaigns and industrial clients who also order apparel, signs and safety materials from us. Keeping all of those products in one shop keeps colors, fonts and logos consistent across every piece, from stationery to direct mail. Digital Printing or Four Color Process: Which Fits Your Job

We print commercial work both ways, and the right choice depends on quantity, timing and color:

  • Digital printing: the better fit for short runs, quick reorders and pieces where each copy changes, such as names or addresses. Setup is light, so small quantities stay practical.
  • Four color process printing: the better fit for longer runs, where the cost per piece drops as the quantity rises and color stays even from the first sheet to the last.
  • Spot colors for brand work: when a logo color has to match exactly, a named spot color does that more reliably than a process blend. Read why we work with the Pantone Matching System.

Not sure which applies? Tell us the quantity and the date you need the job, and we will recommend the method when we quote.

Paper Stock, Size and Finish

Three decisions shape how a printed piece looks and feels in the hand. You do not have to know the answers before you call, but it helps to think about them:

  • Stock: lighter text weight paper for flyers, letterhead and booklet pages, heavier cover weight for business cards, postcards and booklet covers.
  • Finish: a gloss sheet makes photos and color pop, while a matte or uncoated sheet reads easily and takes a pen, which matters for forms, letterhead and reply cards.
  • Size and fold: a brochure can open as a bi-fold or tri-fold, and a postcard size decides how it mails. Settle the finished size before the artwork is built.

Send the quantity, size and stock with your quote request, or describe the piece and we will suggest a combination that fits the job and the budget.

Preparing Your Files for Commercial Printing

Clean files save a proof cycle. Our artwork guidelines cover every detail, and these are the points that catch most people:

  • Send vector artwork when you can: Illustrator, InDesign and similar files scale without losing quality. A PDF works when all fonts are converted to outlines.
  • Raster images need resolution: for full color digital work, raster artwork should be 600 dpi for the best result.
  • Build at actual size, with bleed: if color runs to the edge of the piece, the file needs bleed beyond the trim.
  • Name your spot colors and cut lines: identify every spot color, and mark any cut or die line clearly in its own unused color.

No artwork yet? Our graphic design artists can build the piece from a sketch or an idea, and our logo design team can start with the brand itself.

Union Commercial Printing

Because we are a union shop, commercial printing produced here can carry the Allied Printing Trades Council label when your organization requires it. Locals, councils, campaigns and union contractors use that for letterhead, envelopes, brochures, member mailings and more. Tell us at the quote stage if the label is required. Our union printing page explains how it works.

Commercial Printing FAQs

Commercial printing is professional printing for businesses and organizations, as opposed to printing at home or a copy counter. It covers marketing and business materials such as brochures, booklets, flyers, postcards, posters, business cards, letterhead and envelopes, produced in quantity with design, color and finishing handled by the print shop.

Digital printing suits short runs, quick reorders and pieces that change from copy to copy. Four color process printing suits longer runs, where the cost per piece falls as the quantity rises. Tell us your quantity and date and we will recommend the right method.

Vector artwork such as Illustrator or InDesign files is preferred. A PDF works if all fonts are converted to outlines, and raster artwork for full color digital work should be 600 dpi. Our artwork guidelines page lists every requirement.
